Microsoft

Description

As PC sales decline, Microsoft must come to terms with the coming of a new world order, one in which Windows may not be dominant, or at least not as dominant as it has been. The Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant brought in $17 billion in net income for its fiscal year 2012, a 27% decline from the previous year’s results.

Consumers are turning increasingly to other operating systems and devices, and Microsoft has been trailing on these fronts. In October 2012, the company released Windows 8 and its Surface tablet, putting Microsoft’s feet fully into the mobile world. But responses to the new OS and tablet have been mixed. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. The Xbox 360 continues to dominate the console market, Microsoft’s business division (including MS Office and SQL database offerings) is humming, and cloud service Azure is now giving Amazon Web Services some stiff pricing competition.
